Mythic Journeys - Coming Soon to DVD

March 15th, 2010  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Films, Mythic Journeys, Spirit and Soul

With gorgeous stop-motion animation and enlightening interviews, Mythic Journeys seeks to reclaim the power of myth, which is the reservoir of human wisdom. The filmmakers gained access to Deepak Chopra and other spiritual leaders for a rich and stimulating dialogue, which is woven in with the astonishing puppetry of Brian and Wendy Froud (The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth). Using the voices of Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), and Lance Henriksen (Alien), the beautiful animated sequence tell the story of a sorcerer, a king, and a talkative corpse, which acts as a fascinating parable on morality and the limits of perception. Mythic Journeys is thought-provoking, as well as entertaining, and skeptics and believers alike will find it refreshingly inspirational.

Griefwalker - Coming Soon to DVD

September 25th, 2009  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Films, Griefwalker, Spirit and Soul

A universal experience whether or not we can admit it, death is the sole counterpart to life. From the moment we take our first breath, death is our only guaranteed experience. This is something Stephen Jenkinson not only understands but something he loves. And he wants you to feel the same way. Griefwalker, a feature length documentary by Tim Wilson, sets its lens on Jenkinson in an unforgettable exploration of death phobia as a culture.

Stephen Jenkinson, a Harvard educated theologian, is one of Canada’s leading palliative care educators. Also considered a philosopher, woodsman, boatsman, and bard, Jenkinson travels throughout Canada providing grief counseling. He rejects the notion of acceptance, deeming it too neutral a disposition. He insists the one true answer is an embrace of death. In order to love life, we need to love death.

Filmmaker and friend Tim Wilson presents Jenkinson with an unclouded eye. Appearing onscreen together, their relationship is complex and occasionally combative. Reverent and respectful but clearly obsessed with death, Jenkinson is an enigmatic figure who can easily shift from talkative to terse. Captured with a cinematic eye, this lyrical, haunting documentary exhibits an unparalleled understanding of mortality.

Tibetan Book of the Dead: Now Available on DVD

August 8th, 2009  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Films, Latest Releases, Spirit and Soul, Tibetan Book of the Dead

Tibetan Book of the Dead: Now Available on DVDDeath is real, it comes without warning and it cannot be escaped. An ancient source of strength and guidance, The Tibetan Book of the Dead remains an essential teaching originating in the spiritual cultures of the Himalayas. Narrated by Leonard Cohen, this enlightening two-part series explores the sacred text and boldly visualizes the afterlife according to its profound wisdom.

Part 1: A Way of Life reveals the history of The Tibetan Book of the Dead and examines its traditional use in northern India, as well as its acceptance in Western hospices. Shot over a four-month period, the film contains footage of the rites and liturgies for a deceased Ladakhi elder and includes an interview with the Dalai Lama, who shares his views on the book’s meaning and importance.

Part 2: The Great Liberation follows an old lama and his novice monk as they guide a Himalayan villager into the afterlife using readings from The Tibetan Book of the Dead. The soul’s 49-day journey towards rebirth is envisioned through actual photography of rarely seen Buddhist rituals, interwoven with groundbreaking animation by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Ishu Patel.

Special Bonus Feature: The Trap - see what happens when Buddhist teachings are applied in a Nova Scotian fishing village.

“Leonard Cohen’s narration, it must be said straight off, was perfect. No one else
could have succeeded so brilliantly at calmly and richly presenting this series.”
- Canadian Content

The Tibetan Book of the Dead is a marvelous documentary creation. It is excellently written, and Leonard Cohen’s narration suits the theme beautifully. The cinematography is breathtaking: snow-capped, mighty mountains pinpricked by isolated towns provide suitable images of insignificant humanity in a vast, lonely, and hostile universe. Yet this view is juxtaposed with a sensitive portrayal of Tibetan Buddhism’s central tenet: To seek truth and practice compassion is the meaning and purpose of life. The characters of the lamas — filled with joy and compassion — imbue the film with the light of their eternal hopes for the world…This is a film that demands multiple viewing…Highly recommended.”
- CM Magazine, The Manitoba Library Association

Son of Man

March 23rd, 2009  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Culture and Arts, Films, Latest Buzz, Son of Man, Son of Man, Spirit and Soul, VOD

In the state of Judea in southern Africa, violence, poverty and sectarianism are endemic. The neighboring Alliance has invaded to restore ‘peace’ at gunpoint. Bloody street battles accompany the neighboring dictatorship’s incursion into its weaker satellite. Promises of a transition to open democratic rule accompany summary executions and brutal massacres. As the civil war reaches a new level, a divine child is born to a lowly couple. As he grows and witnesses the inhumanity of the world he lives in, his angelic guardians offer him an escape to the heavens. He refuses. This is his world and he must try to save it from the work of evil men and from the darkness working through them. As an adult, he travels to the capital, gathering followers from the armed factions of rebels that crisscross the land. He demands that his followers give up their guns and confront their corrupt rulers with a vision of non-violent protest and solidarity. Inevitably, he attracts the attention of the Judean tribal leaders who have struck a power-sharing deal with the aloof Governor Pilate. The Son of Man must be brought down and destroyed. It should be another simple ‘disappearance’ like any other…

Fierce Light - Now Available On DVD

March 23rd, 2009  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Editor Picks, Fierce Light, Films, Latest Releases, Spirit and Soul

In these times of crisis, there is an electric charge in the air, a burgeoning renewal amongst both people who have focused their lives on the spiritual, and those whose lives are centered around the struggle for change. Featuring Velcrow Ripper’s stunning cinematography, a compelling soundtrack, and dramatic stories of resistance and transformation, FIERCE LIGHT: WHEN SPIRIT MEETS ACTION is a feature documentary that captures the excitement of Spiritual Activism that is catalyzing the planet. Fueled by the belief that “another world” is possible, Ripper seeks out today’s stories to reveal what is possible when individuals, friends and strangers, faced with a world in crisis, rise to their absolute best.

While including passionate testimony from devoted activists such as author Alice Walker, actress Daryl Hannah, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and, most poignantly, environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill, “Fierce Light” is also a globe-trotting record of Ripper’s personal quest (following his previous film, “Scared Sacred”) to transcend specific religious faith and embrace an all- encompassing vision of unified humanity, with the civil-rights movement of the ’50s and ’60s as its solid foundation.
-Seattle Times

Certainly the best documentary I saw at the Waterfront Film Festival recently was a collection of inspiring stories that made up “A Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action.” Filmmaker Velcrow Ripper (”Scared Sacred”) globe trots around the world looking at a vast range of people protesting various social issues and examines the notion that social action is most effective when it is deeply rooted in some form of spirituality. The documentary has received awards at numerous film festivals and it is slowing rolling out into theaters this summer with a positive, grassroots buzz growing.

Meditate & Destroy: Now Available on DVD

March 21st, 2009  |  by Alive Mind  |  published in Editor Picks, Films, Latest Releases, Meditate & Destroy, Meditate and Destroy, Spirit and Soul, VOD

Meditate and Destroy profiles the persona who quite possibly represents America’s most unexpected Buddhist: former punk rocker and juvenile delinquent Noah Levine, bestselling author of the book Dharma Punx. As a teenager, Levine was mired in an abyss of violence, drug and alcohol abuse – and criminal detention. When he hit bottom, attempting suicide in juvenile jail in the late 80’s, Levine received a phone call from his father who instructed him how to take baby steps toward initiating meditation practice. Knowing that he either need to die or to change, Levine tested meditation and felt a glimmer of freedom from his intense suffering. Today, Levine is a respected teacher and figure in what is perhaps the most unconventional Buddhist community in the country: the “Dpunx Nation.” Staking claim to his egalitarian urban vision, Levine states that “Buddhism is not just for hippies anymore” as he reaches out to a new generation of youths who are turning to meditation as they seek a departure from their lives of drugs, violence and crime. In major cities throughout America, these unlikely Buddhists find comfort – and affinity – in Levine’s approach. Today, New York, Hollywood, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Boulder and Portland all host regular Dharma Punx-inspired meditation groups that allow punks to develop their own awareness on a deep level while retaining their edge and individuality.

Meditate and Destroy is the definitive documentary film about the Dharma Punx nation, its roots and continued expansion in U.S. cities.
